Vietnamese mathematicians like settling in the US, why?

25.06.2011
The US is the choice of many Vietnamese talents

Vietnamese Professor Ngo Bao Chau, who has won the Fields Medal, spending 15 years living and working in France, has decided to go to the US.

It is estimated that there are 100 Vietnamese people who are working as professional mathematicians, and the majority of them are settling in the US.

Those famous Vietnamese mathematicians in the US include Professor Vu Ha Van of Rutgers University, Professor Duong Hong Phong of Columbia University, Professor Dao Hai Long of Kansas University, Professor Le Hai An of Utah University, Professor Le Tu Quoc Thang of Georgia Technology Institute, Professor Pham Huu Tiep of Florida University, and Professor Ngo Thanh Nhan of New York University.

According to Le Tuan Hoa, Chair of the Vietnam Mathematics Association, about 30 Vietnamese mathematicians living and working abroad have regular exchanges with colleagues and institutes in Vietnam and sometimes. And a half of the number of the mathematicians is working in the US.

With 13 medals, the US holda a leading position in terms of the the number of Fields Medal won, followed by France with 11 medals, Russia with 9 and the UK 6 medals.

At the latest international mathematicians’ congress in India, nine out of 11 invited plenary reports were the ones from the US.

Why?

A Vietnamese mathematics professor said that all scientists want to have the best working environments for themselves, where they can work and exchange views with other people, where there are people, who can understand their works. the US is really a good environment which can meet such requirements of scientists.

Professor Ngo Bao Chau, in an interview given to local press, also said that he has decided to go to the US and work at Chicago University, because he needs the colleagues who understand what he is doing.

According to Professor Ha Huy Tai from Tulane University in the US, there are a lot of universities and research institutes in the US. On the country, when considering biographies, universities and institutes do not care if the candidates come from the US or any other country. Meanwhile, there are fewer universities in the Europe, and sometimes, locals receive priority.

“The US pays higher than other countries. And your salary will be based on your capability,” said Professor Ha Huy Tai.

Persuading Vietnamese talents to return to Vietnam, why not?

Experts still believe that it is entirely possible to persuade Vietnamese talents to return to Vietnam to work in the homeland. Though the US is considered the ideal working environment, it is not the ideal environment for living. Vietnamese people enjoy the warm and friendly life in the homeland. Besides, most of them still have relatives, parents or children living in Vietnam.

Professor Ha Huy Tai admitted that though the US is good for working, but the life is boring and people always have to bear hard pressure caused by the high competition in the working environment.

Experts have also pointed out that if Vietnam can offer the pay high enough to ensure good lives for Vietnamese scientists and their families, a lot of scientists will return.
