AUSTRALIA: Overseas students returning, says Navitas

08.06.2011
Private higher education provider Navitas has signalled the worst is over in the collapse of overseas student numbers, with the business in recovery after a low point last October.

Chief executive Rod Jones said student numbers had been on the increase since then, with feedback from agents in key markets, including China, suggesting this positive trend was being felt nationally across the international education sector.

"From about June last year we've seen a steady increase in terms of international students coming back," Mr Jones said.

However, Navitas expected total student numbers this month could be 5-6 per cent down on March last year because of pipeline effects.

A host of causes are responsible for the drop in overseas student numbers, including attacks on Indian students, currency and price movements, and policy changes weakening the link between education and migration.

Navitas provides English language courses and other programs to prepare students for university programs.

Despite some soft numbers, Navitas has been able to lift earnings, partly by pushing up student fees.

Last week, Mr Jones was in Sydney to spruik a recent purchase, global media training provider SAE.

Its courses include games and web design, animation, film, digital journalism audio engineering with qualifications ranging from certificates to degrees.

Navitas paid $289 million for SAE, which has 47 campuses in 19 countries.

Mr Jones rejected suggestions that SAE was an odd fit for Navitas as a higher education provider and an attempt to offset declines in Australia's overseas student numbers.

About 90 per cent of SAE students in Australia are domestic students.

With its spread of vocational and higher education, SAE is similar to two other Navitas colleges, the Australian College of Applied Psychology and the College of Public Safety, Mr Jones said.
