AUSTRALIA: Australian National University has the best ranking to date for philosophy, according to new rankings

Seven Australian universities are in the world's top 50 for arts and humanities according to QS Rankings data released today. The Australian National University came sixth in the world in modern languages, philosophy and geography and area studies, 10th in linguistics, 12th in history and 29th in the final category, English language and literature.
The University of Sydney and University of Melbourne were in the top 20 in every category but geography and area studies. Melbourne and Sydney were the only institutions to top ANU in any subject, pushing it to third spot for English language and literature.
The Australian results were extracted from the QS Rankings top100 tables.
Commentary released with the results noted ANU's philosophy ranking was the best-ranking position of any Australian university in the QS World University Rankings by subject area to date.
In previous weeks the company has released rankings for engineering & computer science, life sciences and natural sciences, with the final subject area, social sciences due later this month.
Criteria taken into account in the rankings include academic reputation, employer reputation and research citations. Academic and employer reputation measures counted more heavily than research citations for the arts and humanities subjects.
Vice president for Strategic Planning and Marketing at QS, John Molony, said Australian universities were "competing at the top level with the elite and longer-established institutions around the world in those subjects".
"The more granular view of the rankings by subject points to areas of excellence that are missed in the overall world exercise."
