SOUTH AFRICA: Broadband for universities by year-end

South Africa will have top-class broadband connectivity to the South African National Research Network (Sanren), writes Farzana Rasool for IT Web.Delivering her budget vote speech last week, Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor said: "The connection of all the University of South Africa (Unisa) learning sites will also assist the university to offer better tuition support to its students though e-education. The potential impact is significant as over 30% of all students registered for university studies are at Unisa."
More than R200 million (US$28.6 million) will be spent on expanding access to Sanren in this financial year to ensure all universities are connected by December.
