John Quelch appointed dean of Chinese business school

03.12.2010

John Quelch, former dean of London Business School and noted Harvard marketing professor, is to become dean of Ceibs, the Shanghai business school , in February 2011. He will replace Rolf Cremer, who steps down after six years in the job. Prof Quelch was visiting professor at Ceibs in 2009.

British by birth, Prof Quelch is a prolific writer of books and case studies - more than 3.4 million copies of his case studies have been sold, the third highest for a single professor in Harvard Business School history. He holds degrees from Oxford University, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, the Harvard School of Public Health and a doctorate from Harvard Business School.

As dean of London Business School in the late 1990s, Prof Quelch instigated changes which took the school from being a strong academic institution to one which was also externally focused, particularly in relation to alumni and recruiters. Between 2001 and 2006, he was Harvard Business School’s first senior associate dean for international development. He is also a non-executive director of Sir Martin Sorrel’s London-based WPP, the advertising giant.

Prof Cremer, who will continue at Ceibs (China Europe International Business School) as emeritus dean and economics professor, saw the school grow rapidly during his tenure. It now has three campuses in China - Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzen - and runs an executive MBA programme in Accra, in Ghana. He was also instrumental insetting up Ceibs’ own publishing company.
