The University of Manitoba

The University of Manitoba was established in 1877 to confer degrees on students graduating from its three founding colleges - St. Boniface College, St. John's College, and Manitoba College. The University was the first to be established in western Canada.

In 1900 the Manitoba legislature changed the University Act so that the university could do its own teaching, and in 1904 a building in downtown Winnipeg became the first teaching facility with a staff of six professors, all of whom were scientists. By 1929, following the addition of more programs, schools, and faculties, the University had moved to its permanent home in Fort Garry.

From its founding until the present time, the University has added a number of colleges to its corporate and associative body. In 1882 the Manitoba Medical College, which had originally been founded by some practising physicians and surgeons, became a part of the University. Other affiliations followed:

  • Methodist Church's Wesley College in 1888
  • Manitoba College of Pharmacy in 1902
  • Manitoba Agriculture College in 1906
  • St. Paul's College in 1931
  • Brandon College in 1938
  • St. Andrew's College, established to train the ministry for the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church, became an affiliated College in 1981.

In 1967 two of the colleges that had been part of the University of Manitoba were given university status by the provincial government. United College, which had been formed by the merging of Wesley College and Manitoba College, became the University of Winnipeg, and Brandon College became Brandon University.

International Students

Participating in the World Community
Brandon University welcomes international students because it fully recognizes the invaluable contribution they make to the maintenance of a universe of ideas and values within our institution. At the same time, Brandon University has a lot to offer to international students. In addition to the benefits of our education system and personable campus that are enjoyed by all students at the university, international students are provided with services specific to their needs.

Office of International Activities
The University has established an office to serve the needs of its international student body and to further promote and encourage the internationalization of the institution. As the focus of international activities at Brandon University, the office is responsible for providing guidance and support to the International Student Organization and the Brandon University Homestay/Hospitality Program.

English for Academic Purposes Program
International students interested in one of Brandon University’s degree programs may need or would benefit from English language training. The English for Academic Purposes Program is a non-credit, multi-level language program designed to provide an immersion experience for students interested in improving their listening, speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension skills. The English language program is open to students who plan to go on to study at any number of English-speaking educational institutions and is also designed for those who want to improve their use of English as a second language for professional or personal purposes.

International students' advising
The International Students’ Advisor provides assistance with academic advising, immigration concerns, cultural adjustment, housing, and other matters which relate to students from other countries. This office also advises the
International Students’ Organization and serves as liaison to the Canadian Immigration Service and other agencies involved with international educational exchange.
