About Edmonton

Canadian Universities:

The University of Alberta

The University of Alberta is situated in the heart of City of Edmonton in a scenic area on the south bank of the North Saskatchewan River. Edmonton, the capital city of the province of Alberta, has a greater area population of about 875,000 and is known for its expansive park system that runs through the city. Edmonton has cold, but sunshine-filled winters and very pleasant summers. It is located only a few hours drive from the Banff and Jasper National Parks, which offer excellent skiing in the winter and excellent hiking and sightseeing in the summer.

Exchange Students

The University of Alberta has exchange agreements with over 100 partner universities around the world. Only students whose home university has an official agreement with the University of Alberta can attend as exchange students.

To determine if your university has an agreement with the University of Alberta consult the Partners database.

If your institution is listed in this database contact the exchange administrator on your home campus for information on how to participate in this exchange.

If your university is not listed your options are to study at the University of Alberta on the Visiting Student Certificate Program, in the English as a Second Language Program, or (if you meet the English Language Proficiency requirements) as a regular visiting student or an Open Studies student.

Undergraduate Admissions

The U of A is a diverse and welcoming community for students with many different backgrounds and individual experiences. You may be applying from high school, from another postsecondary institution or you may have attended high school in another province or another country.

To assist you in determining whether the U of A is the right choice for you, we have separated our admission information into the following five categories. Select the category that best represents the information you are seeking. If you are unsure where to begin, start with Programs of Study and work your way through the remaining categories.

Programs of Study: General information on individual Faculties and Schools, and the programs offered by each.

Requirements: Admission to the U of A is based on the successful fulfillment of general and Faculty-specific requirements.

Programs of Study

Undergraduate studies (Bachelor's Degree) at the U of A covers a wide variety of programs such as the BA in Native Studies, Bachelor of Laws and Pre-Veterinary Medicine. Undergraduate programs are, on average, four years in length.

Degree programs at the U of A are housed within individual Faculties and Schools. The U of A also offers a variety of special programs that are housed within various offices and departments around campus.

Check for your program of study and the admission requirements.

Faculty of Engineering

With an Engineering degree from the University of Alberta, you can play a major role in shaping the landscape and infrastructure of tomorrow's industries and communities.

Successful engineering professionals in the 21st century will require a blend of practical experience, the ability to lead and respond to change, and a solid understanding of their field.

All first-year Bachelor of Science in Engineering students follow a common curriculum. At the end of first year you will apply for one of the twelve degree program choices and either the Traditional or Co-op program. The Traditional program requires four years of study and the Co-op program, which integrates 20 months of paid engineering-related work experience into your academic studies, requires five years.

Regardless of which route you choose, practical experience is the norm. In all areas of study, you will work in laboratory settings with the latest equipment and you will have the opportunity to work on design projects throughout your course of study.

Engineering Instruction in French: In conjunction with Facultй Saint-Jean, most of the first-year curriculum can be taken in French on the Facultй Saint-Jean campus.
